On Monotheism. Lecture 8: the Market

Note: the following excerpts are taken from course notes to our ‘Introduction to Monotheistic Faiths’ (IMF) series (offered by the Institute of Religious Studies, or IRS). This elective is a perennial favourite of sophomores at the University of West Clare: the world’s fastest third-level institution®.

The two dominant monotheistic faiths of the 20th Century (and 21st thus far) are the Science and the Market.

Much has been said about both of these, but for today, we propose to review in depth the latter, which goes by many names across the globe, but which we in the West know as the Market.

Primary fanatics of this cult include economists, traders, government ministers, central bankers, and estate agents: essentially, anyone garbed in pinstripes can be considered one of the priestly caste.

Core beliefs

Much like the Old Testament God, it is not possible to act with certitude in the face of the Almighty Market. Although the priests insist that one must respect the Market, they also speak of it as capricious, cruel and capable of inflicting…
